Weekly Dispatch Special – Pacquiao Mayweather

A few weekly musings concerning two of the biggest egos in our sport….Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Firstly, it never ceases to amaze me how many people, for such a prolonged period of time are fascinated by the possibility of this fight being made. All the signs still point to a fight not being made with Mayweather turning his attention to his foundation, while Pacquiao is busying himself with congress. Both of these reasons have been used as reasons for each one ducking the other. Yet people’s appetite is still whet.

Well…with the number of comments that have been on this site it’s perhaps time for you to hear my two cents on the two men. Let’s bust some myths.

People have accused Mayweather of being a giant walking ego. Well, fair point. But clearly the light that shines out of his ‘you know what’ has blinded people to the fact that his potential foe also knows no bounds in his endless quest of megalomania to dominate both in and out of the ring. Manny Pacquiao – congressman, singer, film star, celebrity…oh yeah and boxer. It takes some major delusions of grandeur to think that people will buy tickets to an arena concert to listen to you sing, even though the sound of your voice is reminiscent of a depressed whale. Why in god’s name would you take a lead in a film, even though the only piece of acting experience was trying to convince people that he was scared of needles and spilling blood?

Actually the answer to that question is that if enough people say you are great then you believe your own hype. It is hard to label the man as a paragon of humility when underlings fight it out to sleep by his bed. While Mayweather is surrounded by a needless posse of beefcakes, Pacquiao walks quietly as his breadcrumbs are scooped up. Actions speak louder than words, and sometimes it’s the quiet ones you have to look out for.

Meanwhile Mayweather is more “Funny” than “Money”. Sure, he is now busy setting up his charitable foundation as well as hinting that he might take a two year break from boxing. This is farcical as Pacquiao’s attempts at karaoke. Mayweather has no credible opponent. He will never fight Paul Williams – there is almost a foot height advantage. He will never fight Sergio Martinez – there is not enough money. Finally he will not fight Manny Pacquiao, even though I hope I am very wrong. Pacquiao, a politician with a clean image to maintain will take a blow bigger than any punch if he loses to Mayweather. In a battle between Good Vs Evil, Evil can’t win. Mayweather meanwhile can never afford to lose his undefeated record. His sole selling point is the interest that is generated by whether his opponent can defeat him.

Anyway other points….

David Haye – you have managed to lose all credibility on any side of the Atlantic.

‘Sugar’ Shane – why is it when your aged body has only a few fights left in it did you turn down much more lucrative fights (after all money is what matters) and signed to fight Sergio Bor…Mora? A little sour taste in my mouth.

Finally…here’s hoping that Antonio Margarito never gets close to a boxing ring again. He applied for a boxing license in Nevada. Let’s hope it Neva happens
