Floyd Mayweather's next fight may be against a 19 year old

If you were upset that Floyd Mayweather took on a lightweight in his last fight you can breathe a sigh of relief that his next opponent could be a welterweight. However that welterweight is only 19 years old (see a video of him above). It would be like taking candy from a baby.

When Mayweather was about 19 years old he was still an amateur fighter in the Olympics.

Richard Schafer spoke to Bill Emes, a website reporter from Boxing Scene and said…read on for more,

"There is a young fighter, 19-years-old. All of Mexico is talking about him. And he is filling up 10,000 people in venues in Mexico. He is fighting at 147; he's undefeated. He's a red head, a red head Mexican. They call him "Canelo," cinnamon head - Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. He would like nothing better than to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr,"

Of course he would like to fight someone as popular as Mayweather and make some money, but he is clearly not ready.

Canelo does have a 29-0 record, but before any of you point to that as proof that he is ready, you need to understand that many Latin American fighters don’t fight in the amateurs, they fight as professionals to make money. They don’t have the luxury many American fighters do who can get sponsorships to pay for their training expenses while they hone their skills in the amateurs.

Floyd Mayweather had over 80 fights as an amateur before he turned pro. To date, Canelo Alvarez still doesn’t have that many fights as an amateur or pro.

Schafer went on to say, "You put Saul Alvarez in with Floyd Mayweather and you put it in Aztec Stadium - you sell 100,000 tickets. The guy [Alvarez] on his own sells 10 to 20,000 tickets. Floyd Mayweather is a big event fighter."

Mayweather may make money on this fight, but he wont be making any fans.

Its important to say that this is all very premature, no fight has been set. But if he fights Alvarez instead of Shane Mosley, Andre Berto or the winner of Pacquiao vs Cotto, then he will have earned himself a new nickname Floyd “The Ducker” Mayweather.
